Navigation Tips

Navigating New York City can seem daunting at first, but with a little guidance, you'll be able to navigate it like a pro. By following these tips and familiarizing yourself with the subway system, you'll soon feel confident navigating New York City like a local. Enjoy exploring the city!

Before entering the subway system, you'll need to purchase a MetroCard. These can be bought at vending machines located in subway stations. You can load it with a specific amount of money or purchase an unlimited ride pass for a set number of days.

Familiarize yourself with the New York City subway map. The map shows the various subway lines, stations, and connections. Each line is designated by a color and a number or letter.

In Manhattan, trains traveling north are considered uptown, while trains traveling south are considered downtown. Make sure you know your destination's general direction to choose the correct train.

Use online maps or apps like Google Maps or the official MTA website to find the nearest subway station to your current location or destination.

Pay attention to the signs in the station indicating the direction of trains, the line they belong to, and the final destination of the train. Follow signs to the correct platform for your desired train.

Some stations offer connections between different subway lines. Look for signs indicating transfer points and follow the directions to reach connecting trains.

Be mindful of the local and express trains. Local trains stop at every station along their route, while express trains skip some stations. Check the signs on the platform to make sure you are boarding the correct train.

Pay attention to the announcements and signs indicating the upcoming station. When your stop is approaching, move towards the doors to prepare to exit the train.

Keep your belongings secure, be aware of your surroundings, and follow subway etiquette. Let passengers exit before boarding, offer your seat to those in need, and avoid blocking doors.

Consider using subway apps like Citymapper, Transit, or the official MTA app for real-time updates on train schedules, delays, and service changes.

If you're unsure about which train to take or need assistance, don't hesitate to ask MTA station agents, fellow passengers, or use the Help Point intercoms located in stations.

The MTA provides regular Q47, Q48, Q70 SBS, Q72 and M60 SBS service between LaGuardia Airport, Manhattan, Queens and beyond with subway connection.
