the csiff2021 experience

In addition to on-demand screenings of thought-provoking experimental, narrative, documentary, animated short films (each screening was followed by pre-recorded artist Q&A), CSIFF2021 online film festival hosted a live masterclass led by legendary producer/filmmaker Monty Ross; 9 live/interactive panels and artist chats, nightly after parties (featuring the talents of DJ Q-Nice), and on May 23rd attendees witnessed as we presented both the Audience Choice Award, and and Jury Awards (Best Directing; Best Screenwriting; Best Performance By an Actor; Best Cinematography; Best Film) to our winning artists.  The CSIFF2021 Jury Awards were sponsored by Final Draft.

Where the Sun Sets

Ten years after a tragic accident claims the life of his mother, Luke Singh struggles to make ends meet while working as a fisherman. Unable to take care of himself and his sick grandmother, Luke is presented with an opportunity to make a lot of money, but the decision comes at a much greater cost.

Sweet Rind

Elsie holds Algie captive in the basement of her father’s unfinished church. Algie, the mastermind of a notorious scamming operation in Jamaica, executed her sister, brother-in-law and nephew. Her death was as a result of trying to expose Algie’s attempt to extort her father.Using maroon combat tactics, Elsie captures Algie. She administers heavy-handed punishment, juxtaposed with a lesson in Jamaican history, while sewing a quilt.She struggles with the notion of forgiveness as justice may not be served to her satisfaction by the penal system; ending his life seems more.

On her way to meet her dad, a woman reflects on her life. Along the way, the country looks empty to her and, slowly, memories of past lives are coming back to her. Is it real ? Or is it only a dream ?

      Masterclass with monty ross

      Disrupting the Norms of Distribution in Film and Television: Then & Now

      Content Creator Monty Ross is not afraid of social media. In fact he has embraced all forms of storytelling: Iconic Hollywood Movies. Major Commercials. Disruptive Music Videos. Engaging documentaries.


      Producer/director/filmmaker - Mr. Ross was a part of the vanguard that took the independent filmmaking industry by storm and presented new and engaging stories about the African-American experience that are known throughout the world. As a co-producer, from the early 1980s through to the 2000s, Ross's collaboration with Spike Lee brought to worldwide audiences critically acclaimed films: Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, School Daze and Keep The Faith Baby (The Life and Times of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.) 


      This is a unique opportunity to gain insights for one of the original disruptors.

      Sharing Caribbean narratives. This is the motto Maëlla Kancel lives by since 2019 with  Karukerament, her podcast about the representation of the Caribbean in cinema and television. As she explores films and tv shows, she documents her journey to define her Caribbean identity as a French Black woman from Guadeloupe. (Karukerament Podcast is a CSIFF Media Partner)
